Remembering Miguel Ángel Virasoro

July 22nd, 2022.

The last part of the activity will be devoted to remembering several other aspects of Miguel Ángel’s life and contributions. Researchers associated with the History Program of the School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires will focus on the return of Miguel Ángel’s to Argentina in the early 70’s and his role as dean of the School of Sciences of UBA. Max Dickmann, a close friend of his, will read some paragraphs of a book he is writing on the life of Miguel Ángel. Giorgio Parisi, 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics winner and long time collaborator of Miguel Ángel, will speak about their common endeavor. Fernando Quevedo, former director of the ICTP in Trieste, Italy, and Daniele Amati, former director of SISSA in Trieste too, will remember the role of Miguel Ángel’s as the first director of ICTP after the passing of its founder, the Nobel Prize winner, Abdus Salam.  Lilia Romanelli and Roberto Perazzo, from the National University of General Sarmiento, will talk about the second return of Miguel Ángel’s to Argentina in 2011 and his incorporation to the UNGS. Finally, we will show brief videos sent by people who cannot attend the session and open up the microphone for those who would be willing to talk about their experiences with Miguel Ángel or express their feelings. This session will be mostly held in Spanish, with the exception of the talk by Giorgio Parisi and the interventions of people who don’t speak Spanish.

We will close the activity with a brief ceremony in which we will unveil a plaque with the name “Miguel Ángel Virasoro” at the entrance to classroom 8 of Pavilion I of the School of Sciences, thus making effective Resolution No. 1079/22 of the Executive Council of the School who designated the classroom with the name “Dr. Miguel Ángel Virasoro”.
